It is a composition based on the idea and definitions of the word “Reset”.
There are several definitions of the word “Reset”. The first definition from the Oxford Language Dictionary: ‘set again’, which reminds me of the scenario of unchanged daily life. Many people are going to ‘reset’ – doing the same work/tasks again, or even encounter the same history again every day. It also means ‘causing a binary device to enter the state representing the numeral 0’. This definition and the 3 words from the title ‘SET’ inspired me to compose the piece by using set theory.
This piece consists of 3 sections: Beginning, Reset, and the NEW Beginning. These 3 sections represent the 3 stages of “Reset”. The first section of the piece asks the performer to whisper the phrase “It begins...” into the instrument, the character is serious and mysterious. The second part is less tense relatively, but emphasising more on the reversion of the reality, which is the “beginning” in the cycle of “reset”. The third section represent the new beginning, therefore materials of the first section reappear (varied) in this session, in order to represent the result and the variation of “reset”.
